It's a bit of a story!
Got your attention YES?! Juliet said I would love this guy and she was spot on. So I board a jetstar plane on Thursday quite wishing I was at the Paris menswear shows but determined to have a productive few days in the capital. I notice a rather tall and slender hairless man sitting a few rows behind me with a very licious pair of glasses on. Very fashion. Like "Oh he is FASHAWN". Thinking nothing more I hop off and enjoy my Wellywood stay.
On Friday while kicking around on Cuba street waiting for a [very exctiting] meeting I notice the same guy. Who is he? Indeed very FASHAWN. Meeting with Carolyn Enting (fashion n beauty editor at the Dominion Post) and her BFF Laurie Foon (aka Starfish) is going swimmingly and I'm in love with their work when Laurie invites me to run with her to this seminar run by some guy called Otto von Busch.
I was totally gutted to miss Otto von Busch's seminar in Auckland a few weeks ago on his PhD thesis entitled Fashion-able: Hactivism and Engaged Fashion Design.
His website Selfpassage describes his work like this:
Selfpassage is run by Wronsov a.k.a Otto von Busch, a haute couture heretic and fashion renegade hacking the operating system of fashion. As a subconstructive semionaut he explores low level interventions at the interface between the second skin and the modes of production in fashion industry.
Otto and his lovely wife have been based in New Zealand for the last six months and I was worried I would not get a chance to cross paths again.
Until Laurie and I arrive at Massey and who is the guy with the projector? Your right! ahhh great! Honestly, GO have a massive gander through self passage and check out of his exciting craftmanship approach to design and construction in fashion.
Very licious and inspiring seminar and we had a great chat after about the power of social media and the democratisation and spread of fashion information vs the powerhouses of design. And totaly inspired, I snap his outfit of the day to show you these gorg proportions:
Due to fog my Wellington to Auckland flight was delayed by 6 hours this evening - felt a bit emo about the situation. My Karen Walker travel charm (fighter jet pendant) had let me down on awesome travel luck. Until I get a tap on the shoulder and who is it? My new BFF Otto von Busch!
So for the next four hours we discuss everything from fashion vs luxury goods (one being a tool for social mobility, the latter a tool for social stability) to cultural identity and its relationship with design in a politically correct society. *sighs* I shall complain no more KDUB!
