A weekend adventure and memorabilia

Ahh dear friends~!

I was away this weekend at Mt Ruapehu for some fun community and coldness *:-) I wasn't able bodied enough to crank some sweet moves on the slopes buuuuuut look what the seriously awesome Tim, Matt and Marty brought back from the mountain? Way beautiful powder snow!

It still makes my mind boggle how no snowflake is ever the same. Its like finger prints right? But how many more kamillion snowflakes have ever existed vs people... ahhhh!

A search for a hot chocolate and warmth wouldn't have been complete without a stop at a good ol Kiwi visitors info centre - check out the latest in kiwi memorabilia... I heart NZ CROCS!

The Uniform Project

I was SO excited this morning to get an email back from Sheena & Eliza of The Uniform Project - a delicious and fashionable aproach to clothing and sustainable living.

The deal is that Sheena has pledged to wear one dress for a year (well, one style - 7 actual dresses, one for every day of the week) to create many different looks from donated accesories and to raise money for the Akanksha Foundation- an organisation in India that helps kids pay for school and expenses like uniforms.
Having grown up in India Sheena loves how even though conformity was imposed through uniforms "kids always found a way to bend the rules and flaunt a little personality. Boys rolled up their sleeves, wore over-sized swatches, and hiked up their pants to show off their high-tops. Girls obsessed over bangles, bindis and bad hairdos. Peaking through the sea of uniforms were the idiosyncrasies of teen style and individual flare."

The dress itself is a black tunic with deep hidden pockets and 3months into the project has generated several rad looks. These are my favourites from each month:

If your digging what these kids are up to you can vote for them in the Grant for Change competition - the prize would go towards setting up the Uniform Project as a foundation that would continue their efforts and towards executing similar creative projects *:-)

My new love

My new love - Patent Leather White Doc Martins

Seriously chic AND mega awesome for recovering knee patients like myself. HOnestly, the first steps I took in these created all sorts of nostalgic feelings surrounding school shoes and functionality - then I stepped out of the shoe store and felt super mega powerful. Chic, cool and full of self belief. I love how fashion transforms *:-)

MYF rocks the fashion bubble for Vogue

Look who's on the cover of Australian Vogue this month? MYF SHEPHERD!

Maybe I'm getting old (!) or just becoming desensitised buuuut after snapping her photo pap style at RAFW and then to see her rocking this issue ... I feel so cheated....

She's gorgeous and approachable but as soon as I saw her get snapped for for this cover she's back to being this icon of the fashion bubble dream. The dream where humans can exist merely by breathing and food/sleep are irrelevant. Where "you too can look this good if only you..."

*dejected*

The details in the bag

I have been thinking alot about jigsaw puzzles recently - maybe a little bit of life reflecting going on and pondering how our world fits together. I was quite inspired by this leather bag that belongs to my friend friend Paul (Fletch-a-nator). Rough edges and detail orientaed - after a few photos I have realised that sometimes the detail is more delicious than the big picture yea?

Inspire my world *:-)

Photo: Hannah McArdle

I took this photo almost two years ago but it remains one of my favourites. Taken during a history of costume class at Ryerson University in Toronto it holds dear memories - I was taken aback by the smarties imperfections, all slightly odd shapes. But all delicious none the less *:-)

[I got an A for that paper btw..!]

A skinny September?

Just got home from a fashionable night watching The September Issue at Auckland's Civic Theatre as part of the NZ Internatinal Film Festival. This licious documentary follows Vouge Editor-in-chief Anna Wintour for nine months as preparations are made the for the September 08 issue for American Vouge - the largest issue to date weighing in at almost five pounds . One fashionista was heard exclaiming "It was JUST like The Devil Wears Prada.. but, like, REAL LIFE!"

Well cut, set at a good pace and very licious to watch. I felt like I was actually in Anna's living room - not sure if thats an experience I'll ever have?! And I LOVED the very fashionable scene - I felt like all us fashion kids were out united in this really wierd way. Seeing that crowd all together outside of a runway show/party was quite cute. Ahh community *:-)

Ahh and have you seen WWD has reported skinny September issues this year? An indicator of tighter budgest all round - what will the year ahead bring? As one Vouge editor exclaimed "September is the January in Fashion!"

Ethical Jewellery yea?

Oria Wolf Necklace (£114)
and Cufflinks (£168.00)Oooooooooo I WANT!
Check out this animal inspired range of ethical jewellery by Oria. Licious much!

I'm in love with stirling silver especially quirky pendants and charms *:-)

What exactly does ethical jewellery mean? The main issue facing jewellery production (as with fashion and other consumer products) centers around tracability and impact on the environment. Oria state that they "support small-scale, fair-trade companies which have good working conditions, pay decent wages and do not engage in the use of child labour." Sounds good to me.

But what about materials used? Oria give clear details about the metals they use and gemstones too. Mmm pearls just like the oyster intended!

An awesome example of a company commited to ethical tracable product is our very own icebreaker. I love how you can buy a pair of socks/or whatever then enter the baacode (haha) and follow the entire process of production.

Often it's a hard balance finding product thats trend orientated and also produced in a clear and fair way.

aahhhhh passionate much!

Miley for Elle

Have you SEEN Miley for Elle?

My gorgeous 14 year old cousin went and saw Hannah Montana [the movie] for me yesterday (!) and her opinion: "It was SOOOO predictable!" She went on to flesh out the basic chick flick plot line... but I know she loved it. I'm told that Miley [Destiny Hope Cyrus] takes her stage name from her nickname "smiley". There you go.

Interesting to compare the Elle cover with Miley's shoot for Vanity Fair by Annie Leibovitz huh?

Gosh I cant believe she has only just turned 16...

Meals with a Foreign Flair - July 09

Good morning Auckland!
Photo: Mercy Radiology Group XRAY set against early sunshine
Patient: Hannah McArdle

I promise I'm still alive!

Yesterday afternoon I attended my 3rd Meal's with a Forgeign Flair - a monthly creative lunch hosted by Kareen Hillenar.

This months guest speaker was graphic designer Ralph Matthews who recently presented a seminar at the winter 09 event for Design Assembly.

We were lucky enough to hear his thoughts entitled "On the edge of interactive and intelligent design"

This guy knows his stuff. I was most intrigued by the questioned poised "what will come after digital design?" As media changes so does the way we create, share and sell information.

Ralph showed us this brilliant example [below] of electronic paper:

A newspaper that updates itself? Harry Potter much!
