The University of Auckland Glee Club is getting ready for their first public performance on the 21st of August. I got to catch up with the Glee committee and had a sneak peak at a few of their routines....(And practice my newsreader voice..)

How glittertastic the Glee Club is! You can buy tickets here and follow the team on twitter here.

((p.s. There is a rumour that a Gaga mashup features in "A Debut... and that the track was produced by a well known Auckland DJ. Shhhh..))

I give a damn about equality

My new fave site GiveADamn is the brainchild of Cyndi Lauper and the TrueColoursFund. The Give A Damn project is an interactive resource aiming to "give equality the attention it deserves". I watched this interview with Lauper on The Advocate On Air and LOVE the passion and frankness with which she discusses issues of equality in our modern society:
"In every civil rights movement everyone marched, this is how it always was. Because if you want equality for all its got to be all who care and give a damn. If you dont give a damn about someone elses equal rights you better start thinking about your own because if you say its a free society a free country where people are allowed to speak and be who they are well, except for some, then you better watch out that some day your not on the other list. .. you either are free or your not. ... who wants to not have equal rights?..."
Discrimination is rife in our communities and the only way for change to occur is through the growth of love, kindness, compassion and empathy in our hearts. When we walk in someone elses shoes its amazing how empowered we become to speak on their behalf.

The Give A Damn site is bursting with videos, personal stories and hot issues. Follow the project on twitter subscribe on youtube andbecome a fan on facebook. LOVE!

Inception - What is reality?

I got taken to see Inception tonight and I'm still buzzing. Is everything all a dream? The concept of a dream collapsing in on itself is portrayed in a surreal context where each layer of the dream operates in a time frequency exagerated beyond the first.

Go. See. Inception. x

This is why I love Gaga...

HRH Lady Gaga just posted this message on Facebook to her fans....

Photobucket

"At the risk of drawing attention to a hateful organization,

I would like to make my little monster fans aware of a protest being held outside the Monsterball in St.Louis tonight. Although we have had protesters before, as well as fundamentalists at the show, this group of protesters are hate criminals and preach using lewd and violent language and imagery that I wish I protect you all from. Their message is of hatred and divisiveness, but inside at the Monsterball we preach love and unity.

My request to all little monsters and public authorites is to pay these hate criminals no mind. Do not interact with them, or try to fight, Do not respond to any of their provocation. Don't waste your words, or feelings, no matter what you hear or see you are more fortunate and blessed than they are, and in your heart just pray for them. Although I respect and do not judge anyone for their personal views on any politics or religion, this group in particular to me, is violent and dangerous I wanted to make my fans aware of my views on how to approach, or rather not approach, these kinds of hate activists.

Be inspired to ignore their ignorant message, and feel gratitude in your heart that you are not burdened or addicted to hate, as they are. X" - Lady Gaga
Look at the love and beauty in her words.. Oh how precious she is! XXX

Dulux for the win?

I have just seen this add for the Dulux "Let's colour Project" on Andrew's FB... thoughts?

This description of this clip on youtube reads:
"This 2 minute global film was shot by multi-award winning director Adam Berg over four weeks in Brazil, France, London and India. Every location is real and they remain transformed by a palette consisting of 120 different colours. The people in the film are not actors, they are real people who rolled up their sleeves to transform their community with colour."
LOVE the idea -so rad to see abandoned/graffiti ravaged public spaces transformed and made new.. but I feel a little uncomfortable by the last scene that shows chemically created colours being plastered over ancient looking stone walls... West-stamps-East????

Uhgr. Anyone else feel the same? Disagree?

Happy Bastille Day!

Photobucket

I have a slight fascination with all things French so today I brushed up on my French history a little given the date today. Wikipedia says:
"Bastille Day commemorates the 1790 Fête de la Fédération, held on the first anniversary of the storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789; the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille fortress-prison was seen as a symbol of the uprising of the modern nation, and of the reconciliation of all the French inside the constitutional monarchy which preceded the First Republic, during the French Revolution. Festivities are held on the morning of 14 July, on the Champs-Élyséese avenue in Paris in front of the President of the Republic."

Stencil prints changing the world

Nothing makes my heart sing more than fashion being used to create positive change in our world. Check out the latest t-shirt to hit Max stores for the Max Foundation designed by stencil artist Hayley King (Flox). Uber cute!

Photobucket

The Max Foundation, which seeks to "to support individuals and initiatives whose actions enhance and inspire the wellbeing and advancement of New Zealand women”, has given away $75,000 in the last year. EPIC!

Hayley on her design:
"Given Max is an iconic New Zealand fashion brand I wanted the design to have a New Zealand flavour which I have depicted with the use of our native birds, the tui and Fantail, plus Kowhai flowers. As a young New Zealand woman it is a privilege to be aligend with a charity that has the interests of other like-minded New Zealand women at its core"
The Flox tee retails for $59 and hits stores on 5th of July. $10 from each tee is donated to the Max Foundation.

Fashion, change, rad artists... BUY BUY BUY!

Raindrops

I had a day off today and it was so lovely to explore my city a little. I met for coffee with one of my fave graphic designers and then had a little wander through Ponsonby on my way home. I am becoming so aware of the need to really open my eyes - sometimes little treasures go unoticed.

p.s. These were just snapped on my phone.. my camera needs to go to the doctor. *sad face*.

OH Canada...

Photobucket

Happy Canada Day!!!

I can't believe it has been almost 3years since I studied in Toronto! I fell in love with the city with all of its noisy, dusty, dirty streets and the wonderful friends I made *:-)

Some of my closest friends are friends I made on exchange. Nothing beats being 19 and alone in a big and foreign city to force you out of your comfort zone! I think what was so wonderful about our semester abroad was experiencing life with a community of people who were all on the same page when it came to exploring, meeting new people and seeking lots of laughter.

AND FASHION. Gosh I think it was during this travel that I really came to understand MASS PRODUCTION and HYPER CONSUMPTION. It took me several weeks before I felt brave enough to venture into the Eaton Centre! So many people.. so many stores.. so many purchases... Nothing in little New Zealand really compares.

I miss you Toronto, protests and all. And your French on cereal boxes...
