This afternoon while studying for my Sociology of Popular Culture exam I got a message to say another massive earthquake had hit Christchurch. Again? Oh Mother nature you are so cruel.
It got me thinking about how frivolous writing a fashion blog can be, you know while an entire city is having its well being destroyed by unstable tectonic plates. In the words of Marcuse (who I have been studying today) we are all "cultural dupes" who live for entertainment. So rather than writing a bubble gum post and ignore tragedy I decided to reflect on it..
As soon as the February 20 Earthquake hit and charity appeals had been set up I donated cash and helped friends in a small way with rehousing a group of refuges from Christchurch but I now I am at a loss..
Is it ethical to promise The Garden City that life will (as Mayor Bob Parker says) will return to normal and that the rebuild of Christchurch city will continue to take place?
Why not shift the Canterbury economy further away from the sludge it is sitting on now that it continues to move every hour? Create financial incentives for business' to invest in neighbouring areas and to house infrastructure that will generate employment, jobs and security in those communities.
In times of disaster it is children, the elderly, the poor and those less mobile and in poor health that suffer the most. Obviously these people have a greater dependence on others to make sound decisions on their behalf with regards to safety and provisions. I am concerned that the vulnerable are being lead into Armageddon. It feels irresponsible to encourage individuals and families to continue to live in this moving hell.
I write this with love and frustration. Canterbury, please know that my love and thoughts are with you during this terrifying time.
xx
