As long time readers will know I love listening to the stories of creative people and finding out what inspires them. This week I got to have a chat with Matt Zwartz from SKULL AND BONES on their NZFF capsule collection and the ethos that powers their work. I am a bit of a fan!
I loved the film that accompanied your NZFF capsule collection! Where did that come from?
One of the points of difference with the SKULL AND BONES is that we're a digital media agency as well. That's allowed us to make videos for every single tee shirt design. We have video horoscopes for the Zodiac range, and short stories for the Perennials. The video that was played at the show on the night was a montage from the 20 or so videos we'd already produced. You can see them all here.
Tell us a little about both your agency and your apparel line? Do they influence each other?
Yes, very much. The agency specialises in digital marketing, and that allows us to do things in the digital space that other fashion labels may not be able to easily afford. Conversely the fashion label allows us to express our brand is a very pure and creative way, free from client imperatives, which in turn adds to the agency's reputation for beautiful work. In the end however, they are really an integrated whole, both being under the banner of SKULL AND BONES.
You say wearing Skull and Bones apparel is about wearing a set of beliefs. In 15 words can you summarize those values?
Excellence in All Things, Attack the Orthodoxy, Loyalty Above All. You can find all ten of our governing principles in the Articles of the SKULL AND BONES, which are here. Check them out! You'll enjoy them.
Who would you give a left arm to see wearing your threads?
Dave Grohl, Johnny Depp, Kate Middleton, Adriana Lima, Brett McKenzie. And Nicky Watson, just for fun.
15 year dream?
To be a globally represented billion dollar empire, and a social and political force!
